SpringWell, US Water Systems, and SoftPro, by lab result

These are the three direct-to-consumer brands people compare for whole-house iron and sulfur treatment. This page does not crown a winner. It lists what to read on each spec sheet.

Updated

SpringWell, US Water Systems, and SoftPro are the three storefronts shoppers put side by side for whole-house iron and sulfur filters. This page compares them the only way we can do it without pretending we ran a lab: by the questions your report forces each of them to answer.

We have not tested these products. There is no score column, because a score would be invented.

What kind of equipment each name usually means

Confirm the current model on the site before you rely on this paragraph. Product lines change.

  • SpringWell sells its well-water iron and sulfur filters as air-injection oxidation systems. One tank holds an air charge and a media bed. If your lab numbers or your pH sit outside an air-injection sheet, do not assume this brand has a different chemistry hiding under the same name. Read the sheet.
  • US Water Systems sells more than one approach. Some of its iron and sulfur filters are air injection. Others meter hydrogen peroxide ahead of a catalytic bed. That split matters. You are not comparing one US Water tank to one SpringWell tank until you know which US Water design is on the page.
  • SoftPro sells an air-injection iron filter and describes that system as chemical-free aeration. Treat that as their claim about the category. The limit that counts is the one printed for the model you would actually buy.

If two of them are air injection and the third quote you are holding is peroxide, you are comparing categories, not twins. Read air injection versus peroxide versus a softener before you decide the price gap is the whole story.

Questions to take to every spec sheet

Use the same questions on each product page. Write the answers down. A blank is an answer too: it means the page did not tell you, and you should ask a person at the company before you pay.

Question Why it matters Where the answer lives
Is this model air injection or a chemical feed? The hardware, the upkeep, and the water it can treat are different. A brand can sell both. The product page, in the description of the process, not in a slogan that only says "whole house."
What iron limit is printed, and does it say ferrous, ferric, or total? Clear-water iron and rusty particles are not the same load on a bed. The specification table. If it only says "up to" a number, ask which form of iron that number assumes.
What manganese limit is printed, separate from iron? Black staining can exceed a manganese limit while iron still looks acceptable. Its own line on the sheet. Do not accept "and manganese" with no number.
What hydrogen sulfide limit is printed? Odor removal is a claimed capacity, not a free extra. Its own line. If odor is your reason for buying, a missing number is a reason to stop.
What pH range does the model require? Oxidation stalls outside the range the maker designed for. A larger tank does not repair pH. The operating-conditions table. Compare it with the pH on your lab report.
What is the service flow, and what is the backwash flow? Service flow is what you can use while showering. Backwash flow is what the well pump must supply when the tank cleans itself. Both numbers, in gallons per minute. See how tank size follows those rates.
Does the sheet exclude iron bacteria, tannins, or oil? Slime and tea-colored tannins foul media that would otherwise match an iron number. Limitations, footnotes, and the warranty. Ask if the page is silent.
What do you refill, and what does the maker say about media life? Air systems usually skip a chemical jug. Peroxide and chlorine systems do not. Media replacement is a later bill either way. The maintenance section. Treat lifetime claims as the manufacturer's claim.
Is a sediment pre-filter required? Sand and ferric particles can load a bed that was sized for dissolved iron. The installation notes. Budget the housing if they require one.
What does the warranty refuse to cover? A warranty that voids when iron bacteria or high manganese were present is a specification in disguise. The warranty text, not the badge in the header of the page.

Line the lab sheet up beside those answers

On your report What it suggests What to ask next
Iron, and the water looks clear before it stains Dissolved ferrous iron is likely. Oxidation can turn it into a particle the bed can catch. Does the printed iron limit apply to ferrous iron at your pH?
Iron, and the water is rusty as it leaves the tap Some of the iron is already ferric. Particles may need a sediment step, not only an air charge. Does this model require a pre-filter, and is the iron limit for particulate iron or only dissolved?
Manganese above the stain guideline, or black stains You have a second metal to treat. The EPA secondary guideline is 0.05 mg/L for staining, which is not a filter rating. See how to read that number. What manganese number does this model list, at this pH?
Rotten-egg odor, cold water included Hydrogen sulfide is probably in the supply, not only in the heater. What sulfide limit is printed, and do they want a measured number or will they guess from the smell?
Rotten-egg odor, hot water only The water heater anode is a common cause. A whole-house filter may be the wrong purchase. Stop and read the hot-versus-cold check before you compare brands.
pH outside the range printed on the sheet The oxidation step they describe may not happen as advertised. Do they sell a pH step ahead of this tank, and what range does that produce?
Iron bacteria present, or slime that keeps returning A nuisance biology problem is sitting on top of the metal problem. A new bed can become another place for slime. Will they stand behind this model if iron bacteria are present, or do they want the well disinfected first?
Coliform, E. coli, nitrate, arsenic, or lead This comparison is the wrong task. Call the health department. Do not ask a filter brand to clear a health contaminant with an iron system.

How not to use this page

Do not add up checkmarks. Do not treat the order of the names as a placement we were paid for. The disclosure explains that commissions are not active, and that a future commission would not be a reason to reorder these brands. Do not copy a limit from memory into a group chat. Open the manufacturer page and read the line that matches the model number on the quote.

When the limits fit, check the current price on the manufacturer site. Then compare install, backwash, and whatever has to be refilled. That is the whole comparison we are willing to publish.
